Couples counselling

Couples counselling services are a private (confidential) talk with a trained professional who is there to listen and guide you in a safe space where you and your partner can share your thoughts, feelings and concerns. In that role, I'm equipped to help you understand and cope with a variety of different challenges such as communication, family, recent changes, work, or mental health concerns using a variety of well researched strategies.

To start the process, book a free 15 minute consultation to discuss your needs.

What is a consultation like?

During our consultation call, I will introduce myself and you will have the opportunity to describe the situation you'd like help with and ask me any questions you might have before committing to the service.  I will also use the opportunity to ask questions about your needs and preferences to ensure my skills and practice style are match for you. In essence, the consultation is a chance for us to meet each other and determine if my services are right for you.

What is a session like?

Virtual and In Person sessions are available.

Using the secure online counselling platform Owl, we will connect at a time we arranged during your consultation. At our first session we will go over the consent form you will have signed earlier to make sure any questions you might have about the service are fully answered before we begin.

Sessions are 60 minutes long unless otherwise arranged and start with reviewing your rating on how you've been over the past week using the "Rate your week" Outcome Rating Scale (ORS). We will use these ratings for each session as a start of the conversation on what you might need from that appointment.

During our sessions you might notice strong feelings, need support understanding your feelings, needs, the issues you face or clarifying your goals for therapy. All of this is completely normal and I will be there to support and guide you through the process. From there, we'll use what you've shared to clarify your needs and the results you want, creating a strategy you can use between sessions that makes sense for you. In the last ten minutes of the session, we will talk about how the session was for you, planning any changes as necessary, process your payment and book our next session.

How long does therapy take?

Session therapies

As a trauma-informed counsellor, in these sessions, you both will get to express yourselves safely without worrying about judgement or harm. I will ask questions to help you both explore your thoughts, understand your concerns and find solutions. Together, we work as a team to clarify your needs and meet those with the appropriate treatment methods or support.

Whether your adjusting to changes in your relationship, looking to change a pattern that no longer works, enhance your communication or have a safe place to explore your experiences and expectations of each other, couples counselling is a place where you can find help and learn new ways to handle your challenges. It's like having a coach, helping you develop skills and understandings that enable you both to make changes your relationship needs.

"I'm humbled by each clients' journey, particularly how they've kept going or survived. Truely, it's an honor to offer what I can to support any steps towards their next summit."

— Stephen Walker

"As someone who strives to acknowledge and move through my own growth edges, I'm energized and encouraged to work as a team with each of my clients."

— Stephen Walker

"Change is hard sometimes but feeling stuck can be brutal in its own way. We all need help getting out of a ditch from time to time. Asking for help is not only the first step, it summons our greatest qualities and forges some of our most meaningful bonds with each other."

— Stephen Walker

FAQs

What is your availability for sessions?

As I am gradually building my practice in balance with my personal life, the days and times I offer are continually changing. During your consultation meeting, be sure to ask what availability I have.

Does my insurance cover these sessions?

The simple answer is "maybe."

Each organization uniquely determines its benefit plans, so the best option is to check if my credentials match your plan.

What are your credentials?

I'm a Registered Clinical Social Worker (RCSW) and Registered Social Worker with a Masters degree in Clinical Social Work.

Do you offer emergency counselling?

In short, as my availability is balanced by my other responsibilities, I do not.

How will my information be used?

As a counsellor committed to maintaining excellence in my practice, I do a variety of practices to keep my skills sharp. One of them is to consult with other professionals and get supervision of my counselling practice. During these activities I might choose to discuss a client's case to get insight into how I can better serve their needs. That said, no identifying information (name, address, etc.) is shared and the other professionals I work with are registered and held to the same high standards as me to ensure your privacy.

I will also use Outcome Rating Scale (ORS) data to evaluate the impact of services among all of my clients to identify opportunities to seek out specific training or supervision based on themes in which client's benefit from my services. As above, no identifying information will be disclosed or shared during this process.

All of your information is held privately and securely maintained according to the standards of the Alberta College of Social Work (www.acsw.ca) and the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.

Still have questions? Please book a consultation or feel free to email me your concerns.
